Jim started competing in Hill Climbs and Sprints in 1982, in the Hillman Avenger pictured below. He had limited success in his first year. However, in 1983 he improved greatly, and came 2nd in the Scottish Hillclimb Championship.
In the years that followed, due to family and business commitments, he had little time for competing.
He took the sport up again in 1994, and competed for the next 2 years in his Mk1 Fiesta XR2, again with great success. Due to ill health, he gave up competing again.
He competed in Off-Roading events for some years, winning many awards.
In 2013, his son Michael started competing in sprints and hill climbs in his Honda Civic. He asked Jim along to a track day at Knockhill, and here Jim decided that he would get back into the sport.
He bought a Renault Clio in December 2013 as a standard road car. He and Michael have continued to develop the car over the last couple of years and have both enjoyed great success with it.
